This research explored sex differences in the pathways linking pubertal timing to depression across 4 years. A sample of 167 youth (M age = 12.41 years, SD = 1.19) and their caregivers completed measures of puberty and semistructured interviews of interpersonal stress and youth depression. Youth reported on psychological (negative self-focus, anxious arousal) and social–behavioral (coping) characteristics; parents reported on youths’ social–behavioral characteristics (withdrawal/social problems) and deviant peer affiliations. Early maturation predicted stable high trajectories of depression in girls; although early maturing boys showed low initial levels of depression, they did not differ from girls by the final wave of the study. Latent growth curve analyses identified several psychological, social–behavioral, and interpersonal pathways accounting for the contribution of pubertal timing to initial and enduring risk for depression in girls as well as emerging risk for depression in boys. These findings provide novel insight into multilevel processes accounting for sex differences in depression across the adolescent transition.

Many African American adolescents experience racial discrimination, with adverse consequences; however, stability and change in these experiences over time have not been examined. We examined longitudinal patterns of perceived racial discrimination assessed in Grades 7–10 and how these discrimination trajectories related to patterns of change in depressive and anxious symptoms and aggressive behaviors assessed over the same 4-year period. Growth mixture modeling performed on a community epidemiologically defined sample of urban African American adolescents (n = 504) revealed three trajectories of discrimination: increasing, decreasing, and stable low. As predicted, African American boys were more frequent targets for racial discrimination as they aged, and they were more likely to be in the increasing group. The results of parallel process growth mixture modeling revealed that youth in the increasing racial discrimination group were four times more likely to be in an increasing depression trajectory than were youth in the low stable discrimination trajectory. Though youth in the increasing racial discrimination group were nearly twice as likely to be in the high aggression trajectory, results were not statistically significant. These results indicate an association between variation in the growth of perceived racial discrimination and youth behavior and psychological well-being over the adolescent years.

Theoretical models and empirical studies suggest that there are a number of distinct pathways of aggressive behavior development in childhood that place youth at risk for antisocial outcomes in adolescence and young adulthood. The prediction of later antisocial behavior based on these early pathways, although substantial, is not perfect. The goal of the present study was to identify factors that explain why some boys on a high-risk developmental trajectory in middle childhood do not experience an untoward outcome, and, conversely, why some boys progressing on a low-risk trajectory do become involved in later antisocial behavior. To that end, we explored a set of theoretically derived predictors measured at entrance to elementary and middle school and examined their utility in explaining discordant cases. First-grade reading achievement, race, and poverty status proved to be significant early predictors of discordance, whereas the significant middle-school predictors were parent monitoring, deviant peer affiliation, and neighborhood level of deviant behavior.

Summary
Decades ago, prominent theorists assumed that loneliness could only be experienced in adolescence and adulthood when needs for social intimacy, beyond those which parents could provide, were thought to begin (e.g., Sullivan, 1953; Weiss, 1973). This reasoning is reminiscent of psychoanalytic theorists who likewise believed that children could not experience depression (see Rutter, 1986). Similar to theory and research on depression, such thinking may have stultified empirical work on loneliness in young children because very few studies have been conducted on loneliness at this stage of development. Recently, however, researchers have recognized that, along with the need to be physically and emotionally close to significant others, young children are able to discern their social situation and emotional state. An initial estimate that about 10% of 5- to 7-year-old children feel very lonely or dissatisfied with their social relationships at school (Cassidy & Asher, 1992) supports the notion that young children can actually feel sadness about solitude. Furthermore, children in kindergarten and first grade comprehend the concept of loneliness, reporting that loneliness is “a feeling of being sad and alone” (Cassidy & Asher, 1992).
Given the incidence of loneliness in early childhood and the importance of this phenomenon, the researchers in our lab have studied loneliness among young children in the school environment. Our starting point for investigation was the fall of kindergarten, a time when children have just entered grade school and are making a transition to a new setting and social situation. Hymel, Tarulli, Hayden Thomson, and Terrell-Deutsch (this volume) have reported that feeling lonely often accompanies the occurrence of major life events, such as loss of a significant other or moving to an unfamiliar place.
